| Sardinia:
an exceptional island and an unrivalled sea
The breathtaking island of Sardinia is situated in the centre
of the Mediterranaen Sea and surrounded by crystal-clear water.
It has become one of Europe's most sought-after holiday destinations,
owing to its hundreds of kilometres of white sandy beaches
and to the innate and genuine hospitality of the Sardinians;
the island truly offers something unique to every traveller.
Without straying too far from the more famous tourist resorts
of Alghero, Olbia, San Teodoro and Cagliari, it is possible
to find peaceful, secluded beaches, often deserted or sparsely
frequented even in the high season of July and August.
The mountainous
inland areas of the island are dotted with "nuraghi",
typical stone constructions which date back to the Bronze
Age and lend their name to the unique and mysterious civilisation
which populated the island until roman colonization. Equally
noteworthy are the cities of Nora and Tharros on the southern
and western coasts; these have Phoenician origins but were
subsequently romanised and so display elements of both cultures.
On the northern coast, just a short distance from Sassari
and Alghero, lies Turris Lybissonis, an important example
of a Roman city.
For night-life
lovers, there is no shortage of restaurants, pubs and clubs,
especially in the areas around Alghero and on the coast near
Olbia.
All of these
aspects, not to mention the sunny temperate climate and easy
access to major Euopean cities ( 50 mins flight from Barcelona
and Rome, and approx. 2 hours from London, Paris, Berlin,
Amsterdam etc), make Sardinia an irresistable destination
- at least 250 days a year!
